The Montreal summer Olympics was a significant time in history for athletes as they set and broke various records. During the Montreal Olympic summer games of 1976 athletes set over 45 Olympic records. Records were broken and set in these following sports; swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, boxing and athletics. One person to mention that performed outstandingly was the 14-year-old Romanian girl Nadia Comaneci as she got the first ever perfect 10 in the uneven bars event.
Swimming
23 new Olympic records were set in 1976 in swimming as it was a strong suit for many teams in the Olympic games.
Members from the East Germany women’s swimming team recorded 11 new Olympic records and members from the men’s American team broke 11 records. Canadian swimmers managed to pick up 8 medals from swimming which accounted for about ¾ of their medal count.

The big highlight from the weightlifting competition was the Russian lifter, Vasily Alekseyev. By himself he managed to lift over 255kg in the competition, the clean and jerk. In two competitions combined Vasily almost lifted half a ton (440kg).

In boxing three men demonstrated their skills, they were Leon and Michael Spinks and Ray Charles Leonard. Their expertise in boxing allowed them all to attain gold medals. This success later allowed them to attain world championship titles.

In the decathlon event, American Bruce Jenner intrigued the public by the destroying the previously set record.
Edwin Moses also followed by breaking the world record in the 400 metre hurdles.
Poland’s Irena Szewinska managed to nab the gold medal in the 400 metre sprint while also instituting a new world record.
In the middle distance competitions Cuban Alberto Juantorena won gold in the 800 metre run and dedicated his victory Fidel Castro. Soviet Tatiana Kazankina managed to pull out two gold medals in the women’s 800 and 1500 metre races. In the women’s 800 metre final, the four fastest competitors all destroyed the previously set world record. In the distance running events Finnish Lasse Viren repeated his 1972 Olympics achievement by winning gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres races. In the marathon run, runner Waldemar Cierpinski won gold while also setting a new Olympic time to beat.
