The 1976 Montreal summer Olympic games were not the best as there weren’t even all the teams competing due to certain boycotts. Two countries that were boycotted in the summer games of 1976 were South Africa and the Republic of China.
Issues between Africa and New Zealand led to the withdrawal of 22 African countries.
This included world class runners such as Filbert Bayi from Tanzania who held
the world record in the 1500 meter sprint and in total 440 competitors.
The reason for this is that Africa wanted to ban the New Zealand rugby team (The All Blacks) from touring across apartheid South Africa. This caused African nations to protest about including New Zealand in the Montreal Olympics. The IOC said this was beyond their control as they did not control the New Zealand Rugby team. Due to certain racial policies South Africa had, South Africa was banned from the Olympic games from 1964-1992.

Another team that was boycotted during the 1976 summer Olympic games was the republic of China’s team. Canada’s reason for this was that they didn’t recognize Taiwan as a nation. Although Canada wanted to boycott Taiwan from the Olympic games this would mean they would be in violation with their agreement with the IOC. Canada then made a compromise to allow Taiwanese athletes into the country to play in the games as long as they didn’t play under the flag of the Republic of China.
This compromise was clearly not accepted from the Taiwanese as this led to protests and a threatened boycott from various other countries which also included the US. However, this was later allowed by the IOC which led to the boycott of the Republic of China. After both boycotts this left the Montreal summer games with only 92 countries participating.
